More Fossil Stuff

PeoplePC - News

This time, they found a mammal. It's a little termite eating affair, but it was around when the dinosaurs were. I dunno, I guess I just still think this stuff is cool from when I wanted to be a paleontologist when I was a kid. It's just fun to find out about what kinds of animals were around, then. It rather suits my stance as a member of a nature religion to know more about nature as it once was, as well as how it now is. I just find it interesting, to boot.

Banurgle.com

Welcome to banurgle.com!

This is the webcomic my brother, Andy and I have been working on. It's still a work in progress, but it's finally up. We're probably going to be making changes for a little while, and more comics will come up soon, that will hopefully make more of the characters make more sense, but if you'd like to check it out as a sort of preview sampling, it's up and available for those who are interested.

Wonder Woman

MSN Movies - Hollywood Hitlist

This author is... well, not very bright. As a consequence, I'm not inclined to believe much of it. There's almost no knowledge of the comic books or the mythology in them. Because Wonder Woman is an Amazon, he thinks she must come from the Amazon, which is just silly. The Amazon in South America was named after the mythological one, not vice versa. Wonder Woman is certainly NOT from South America. She's Greek. I know this, and I'm not even much of a Wonder Woman fan. It just bothered me that MSN got someone to write about a comic book thing that knew nothing about it, and just had lots of stupid misconceptions in it. If you're going to write about something, at least have the courtesy to know what you're talking about.

Prostate Cancer Awareness

PeoplePC - News

This article piqued my interest, because well... it's something that could end up happening to me, if I'm one of those unlucky men who end up with prostate cancer. I try to do what I can to keep from getting it, but like the article says, we don't know all that much about it, because there's not a lot of funding, because it's not one of your more popular cancers, like breast cancer. Mind you, breast cancer is bad, and I'd like to see it cured, but really, the consequences from prostate cancer are a lot worse. Still, I like how this article has a more positive tone of learning from the amount of publicity breast cancer gets to try to get more funding for prostate cancer, just because it's probably one of the best attitudes you could have towards it. Hopefully, it'll work out.

Finger Found at Wendy's

PeoplePC - News

Finding a finger would be pretty odd. I think it's interesting, because the police are trying to figure out whose finger it is, still. I know Wendy's might suffer a backlash from this, but for my part, reading the story just made me go, "Y'know, I could go for some Wendy's..." Maybe I'm weird, but I just don't see it happening that frequently, and since it already happened in California, most Wendy's food will probably be finger-free for some time. I guess I just thought it was an interesting article....

Dinosaur Soft Tissue Found

PeoplePC - News

This looked really interesting. It's strange that they managed to find some soft tissue from a dinosaur. At least for the moment, there are no plans to attempt cloning it. I'm not sure where one would get an animal big enough to lay that egg... Though actually, I'm not sure how big a T Rex egg is... maybe it wouldn't be that hard. Anyhow, it's pretty cool that they found some soft tissue from a dinosaur... it'll likely lead to a lot of new discoveries about how dinosaurs lived. I've always been interested in dinosaurs since I was a little kid. Maybe we'll be able to find out more about them.

MSN Dating & Personals - Strange but fun dates

I'm not sure about this article. I mean, it's cool to do something you don't normally do, and I'm all for trying something new, but I think I'm offended by some of the people in it, because they're very much not open-minded, and the activities they suggest just aren't that novel to me. I dunno. I guess I had higher expectations than what they provided... this is often the case for something MSN calls, "unusual."

MSNBC - Vampire bats fly, drink blood and run

This just looked interesting. I like to learn random facts about animals. I'm reading a book right now about cool things animals do. There's some pretty interesting stuff in there... not the least of which are some of the British spellings and different animal names. Anyhow, just thought this was cool.

Proposed Ban on Human Cloning

PeoplePC - News

I'm not sure what I think about this, honestly. I'm not entirely sure how cloning is a violation of human rights in and of itself. I could see how it could be exploited to that end, but the actual act of cloning, I don't understand how that violates human dignity. I mean... you shouldn't be cloned if you didn't want to be, but I dunno... cloning is kind of a sticky situation. I'm not one to make a hasty judgement that it's all good or all bad straight from the hip. I think it requires a lot more thought than that. I think, after a good while discussing the possible benefits and drawbacks, that it could be beneficial to start cloning on an experimental basis for those things that were decided to be beneficial and of least risk. The point about the exploitation of women in the article is well taken. These should definitely be on a volunteer basis... but that's another one of those things that ought to be a given... it's not really a problem inherent in the process of cloning (although a womb is still needed), but rather a potential abuse of the process. That's what we seem to need to look out for more than the process, itself. Then again, there really ought to be more discussion and thought on the matter, from my perspective.

New EPA Head

PeoplePC - News

I was interested in this article both because of a general interest in environmental stories, and because I've applied to a number of EPA jobs. I guess the guy that was appointed seems like a pretty alright guy. I wonder what it was that made Bush appoint him, since he's a horrible, horrible president... especially on the environmental front... but I suppose it could just be to put a band-aid on his reputation. I suppose that's really the best we could hope for. I very much like how this article points out a bunch of Bush's foibles dealing with the environment. It's definitely worth noting. Hopefully, this new guy will be effective in thwarting Bush's misguided environmental ideas.

MSN Health & Fitness - Can Too Many Diets Hurt Your Health?

MSN Health & Fitness - Can Too Many Diets Hurt Your Health?

This article was interesting. I'd heard in classes that some people were overweight, but healthy. I think it's possible. I doubt it's me, but it's possible. It's also good to see what I'd figured was the case, that it can be damaging to diet too much. I've never really been able to diet. I can make my lifestyle healthier, but I can't diet any more than just stopping eating before I'm full to see if I'll get full... and I think that's just stopping overeating. I think improving your health is more important than just losing weight. I've been at it for a while, and my weight has largely levelled off, but I feel healthier as time goes on. I still need to work at it more, of course, but it really does work a lot better, I think... even if the scale doesn't ever show results, anymore. I think people worry too much about dieting. There are ways you can look better and feel better that don't involve the massive shedding of pounds. If you live healthier, you'll lose weight naturally to a point, and feel better just from physically being in better shape. I still have a long way to go... but I think it's a good plan, anyhow.

FOXSports.com - NASCAR- NASCAR under fire for using leaded gasoline

FOXSports.com - NASCAR- NASCAR under fire for using leaded gasoline

What the!? I hadn't heard about this. Leaded gasoline is just terrible for the environment. I don't care if it hurts the cars, it hurts millions of people. Make a new bloody car, for crying out loud. This really got me fired up when I read it. This is just absurd.

MSNBC - Supreme Court weighs Commandments cases

MSNBC - Supreme Court weighs Commandments cases

This article is tough for me. I personally don't think that the ten commandments belong in government buildings. That's fine if your morality is based on the ten commandments, but mine is not, and much of the American legal apparatus comes from other places, as well. The people in the article claim the ten commandments unify Americans, but they don't. Those people were already unified. They keep the non-Christians separate, in what is supposed to be a country without an official religion. To emphasize the point... what would all those people who claim that it's celebrating American legal history say if there were a giant statue of I dunno... say, Zeus, with a plaque that read "All Hail Mighty Zeus, King of the Gods!" Most likely, they'd want it removed. But classical Greek knowledge was instrumental in the creation of our legal system. Perhaps that's too extreme an example... but it's one of the few ways I can demonstrate that it might have been a part of our legal system's development, but that doesn't mean that we need a giant statue of it. Our system is supposed to evolve to be functional and effective for all kinds of people, and our society is becoming more and more pluralistic. Clinging to the past is something that won't actually help us to grow into the future. And if it were a symbol of a religion that weren't yours, you could see how it might be a divider instead of a unifier.

MSNBC - Plastic bottles pile up as mountains of waste

MSNBC - Plastic bottles pile up as mountains of waste

Drinking water may be good, but the waste is a problem. I worry about that a lot, as my family drinks a lot of soda, and often in bottles. Since I've come home, I've persuaded my mom do to more recycling, even though it involves some more trips. I haven't managed to convince my brother, and I feel bad about it. I'm not sure how the problem should be addressed, but it's good to see people at least talking about it.

Abolishing the Death Penalty for Minors

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7051296/

I was excited and happy when I read this. The death penalty is something I'm not really sure belongs in our society anymore... particularly after I saw a show on the History channel about various ways that people are executed. I knew it was nasty, but... it was worse than I thought. In the last election, I voted for the only candidate in my state that was for abolishing the death penalty. She didn't win, but I'm still glad I voted for her. I felt that made the campaign, really. Granted, this ruling only abolishes the death penalty for those who are under 18, but it's a step. What concerns me is that people don't seem to understand that just because the people aren't being punished by death, doesn't mean that they're not being punished. I suppose one could make a case for the state's rights... but personally, I believe this is enough of an issue in the world that it ought to be a national issue. Most of the rest of the developed world has abolished the death penalty, entirely. Their countries aren't overrun with murderous gangs of people who have no fear of punishment... in fact, their crime is down. In a class I took in college, we covered the death penalty (a philosophy class about death), and none of the traditional arguments for it actually hold water. What's particularly disturbing, though, is that my state is one of the ones that still had the death penalty for juveniles. It may only be a small step towards what I think is right, but it's at least enough progress to feel like celebrating.

Return

Well, due to some problems with my java, I've been unable to post for some time... as one might have noticed from the dated-ness of my posts. I'll be resuming posting now that I've figured a way around the problem.

CLARK COUNTY

http://www.lex18.com/Global/story.asp?S=2989614&nav=EQlpWjof

This is just absurd. A kid writes a story about zombies overrunning a high school, never mentioning names, places, or any of that, and someone finds it, and they arrest him and charge him with threatening terrorism on his school. He even says it was for a school project. It's this kind of thing that keeps people from finding real terrorists. Hell, a careful reading of the text should show that there's nothing here.

Just one more reason I'm glad I'm not from Kentucky. Still, it's entirely too close to where I am.
