http://www.mazzastick.com/2011/09/13/the-idea-of-failure/
This is a new way of thinking that I think I should pursue. So much of what has kept me from being myself is fear of failure and disapproval of others. It's strange, because as much as I am willing and able to take on those labels that others view as degrading, and to integrate my own shadow in other areas, failure is something I have not often brought myself to contemplate. It's something that it is now time to release. There is nothing wrong with failing... people do it all the time. Interesting concepts, to say the least.

No Regrets

This is an excellent article, and very much what I needed today. It's about mindfulness, and great advice.

Tolkien Influences
http://www.thebookladysblog.com/2011/08/17/the-top-ten-books-that-influenced-j-r-r-tolkien/
This article is short, sweet, and to the point. I like that about it. It gives a brief listing of books that influenced Tolkien in his writing of the Lord of the Rings. I had read a few of them, but found this to be a good source of potential reading, the majority of which is public domain and available for free on a kindle.

Magical Elitism
http://io9.com/5831053/
I found this an interesting take on the state of fiction today. It asks about why magic, which used to be something everyone could learn to do, has become, instead, something people are born with in fictional stories. Since the former ideas are more in line with actual real-world magical practices, I find the concept worth investigating. There are no answers given, but interesting questions are raised.

Skeptic

I am not normally what one would term a skeptic. I have a sense for when things are perhaps not true, but I am not out to poke holes in people's ideas, nor am I all on board with the ways that people use science to try to prove things wrong. However, this guy comes across as very sensible, and not at all like the kind of people who simply spew ichor at others for believing differently. The article also highlights some compelling evidence the investigator, Joe Nickell, presents about certain paranormal ideas. I would go on different tangets from there, but it's an interesting read.

Mothman

I confess that the idea seemed a little odd to me when I first encountered it (with the movie). This does a lot to make it make more sense. While I am all for recognizing mysterious forces and the influence that mythology can have, this one just struck me as kind of odd and not something I believed in. Still, others do (or have), which creates a being, if only as an archetype. This provides a reasonable explanation for it all.

Wasted Resources

I think this has not been thought through. Sure, everyone would like an island where they rule everything, but building your own just seems like overkill. Not only will there be no infrastructure, and no controlling body to make sure one will exist, the inevitable destruction from without or utter tyranny by one wealthy person who controls everything will end up driving it into the ground... unless the people simply flee from the dreadful living conditions. Lacking in natural resources to generate profits (unless you're going to be fishermen... or perhaps drill for oil off the coast... for which I think you would need to get permits from the United States... it will go for perhaps a couple of years before toppling over... and all that after a substantial fortune is spent to set it up. Silly humans....

Back From the Dead
Having languished for a year and a half or more, I have decided to dust off this blog and give it new life. With occasional exceptions (such as this post), I will stick to the format I have used since the beginning, as something of a link round up with bits of commentary. I doubt it will result in many more readers than I have normally experienced (which is very few), but it will at least keep me entertained.
