Drum Circles and Their Healing Effects

Drum Circles and Their Healing Effects

I'm a fan of drum circles. I haven't really attended any really large one, but any kind of communal, improvisational music-making is alright by me, and I have been at a couple fairly small ones. I got a nice hand drum just so I could go to drum circles in the future. There are some well-documented benefits of it, which this brief article covers, but a lot of it has to do with actually interacting with people in a new way. It's rare in our society to really interact with other people, and this gives you a chance to do just that without as much pressure... and it's a more primal interaction. It's non-verbal, but very deep. I'd definitely recommend attending a drum circle ot anyone.

Senate says English is national, unifying tongue - Yahoo! News

So, they decided to vote for a national language. Personally, I thought that one of the great things about our country was that it DIDN'T have a national language, but hey, that's me. I know it's a popular issue for some (shall we say, closed-minded) people. Personally, I'm a native English speaker, learned Spanish in High School, and have only a smattering of other languages to work with. Just because I speak English, though, doesn't mean I think everyone else should. While it's only gone through the Senate so far, I have doubts that it will have trouble going through the House, considering where the majority lies in that body of legislature. Maybe we'll get lucky, and only the milder version of it will pass, so we still won't have a full-on national language. I'm just really disappointed by this turn of events. I knew there were people who wanted it... it's a sort of misguided nationalism... but I had hoped that our bodies of government would have the sense not to followthose few, belligerent voices.

USATODAY.com - Anheuser-Busch buys Rolling Rock beer brand

This story caught my eye, since I grew up in Latrobe. It raises my eyebrow, since they bought the rights to Rolling Rock, but haven't yet bought the brewery in Latrobe. I know that if they don't, and it closes down, an awful lot of people will lose their jobs in Latrobe, and the city will go down the tubes (probably not being a city any longer). While I'm not sure how I feel about Rolling Rock being acquired by Anheuser-Busch, I hope they also get the brewery, or that it will still be able to brew Rolling Rock, anyhow, just so the people involved (some of whom I know personally) are able to continue living normally.

Chocolate Deities: Chocolate Gods and Goddesses

Chocolate Deities: Chocolate Gods and Goddesses

This is a cute little site. They sell chocolate representations of deities. Some people would be upset by it, I suppose... but I find it an amusing way of celbrating a certain godform. And besides, most deities that would be offended (or whose followers would be offended) are not included on the list. Those included are a strange bunch, but it's still a fun idea, and a cute little gift for the right person. Just thought I'd share.

So, I broke down and made a myspace account. It's actually quite addictive, as long as you know some other people on it. You just keep personalizing your page, and adding new people as you find them (and as they find you). I got back in touch with a few old friends this way, so I'd say it was worth it. Feel free to check me out if you like.

Fender Players Club - Guitar Lessons

Fender Players Club - Guitar Lessons

This is a cool little site I discovered when I got my Fender amp (it was advertised on the warranty card, actually). It's a nice source for all things Fender. It has some cool little articles on it, and I learned to play some Jeff Beck stuff from them, so there's at least some fun to it. There's still a lot of stuff I haven't checked out, as well. Definitely worth checking out if you've got any interest in Fender instruments.

Cinco History

Cinco History

I have a friend at work who is of Mexican heritage, and she's having a Cinco De Mayo party that she invited me to. While I'm not sure whether I'll be attending or not, I did decide to make some Mexican food for dinner and decided I ought to know what Cinco De Mayo was all about. As it turns out, it's quite an interesting story. This article gives a brief synopsis, and puts an interesting spin on why Americans of non-Mexican descent should have reason to celebrate it, as well. I just found it interesting, really, and next time someone talks about Cinco De Mayo, you can know what it's all about, too. ;-)
