Hermetics Library of Magical & Mystical E-Books

http://www.hermetics.org/ebooks.html

This is an excellent collection of magic and occult-related free eBooks. I found this the other day, and have been downloading to my heart's content ever since. There are some pretty famous books in here. There are also some obvious omissions, but you can't necessarily help what you can find for free. The price is right, so if you have a general interest in the occult, and don't mind not having fancy packages and illustrations, there's a lot to be found at this site.

The Band Register 2

The Band Register 2

This is a site I found a long, long time ago. It's really useful. I don't THINK I've blogged it before, but it's entirely possible. Still, it's a really useful site, regardless, if you've got a band or are thinking of forming one. It has a registry of all the names of bands that have ever registered with it (which is a significant number), so you'll be able to see if your band name is taken. Unfortunately, it does lead to lots of disappointment, as (unless you've got a really unusual name) it almost certainly is. Still, a very useful tool to have, since it does allow you to find out these things BEFORE the lawsuit.

The Truth About Violent Youth and Video Games - Game Revolution

The Truth About Violent Youth and Video Games - Game Revolution

This article is rather like the last one, but by a less serious journal, and therefore, more fun. This guy is actually allowed to have a sense of humor and address hypocrisy more directly, and as a video game designer, he at least has some vested interest and authority in the topic. Worth checking out.

Video gaming | Chasing the dream | Economist.com

Video gaming | Chasing the dream | Economist.com

All of this hype about video games is just absurd from my point of view. I like how this article deflates some of that, even if at the start, it seemed like it was going to support the idiocy. On the left side, there's a picture of what I presume to be the cover of the issue this came from, and it just ticked me off at the start, but luckily, this article in a fairly respected journal has a more balanced view of the situation. Maybe we'll be lucky and some people will actually understand what it is saying that didn't before.

Wicca 101

This site is actually a very good introduction to Wicca... which is sometimes hard to find on the internet (I know that for sure). I'd recommend it to people who are either new to Wicca or are interested because some of their family members are, just to avoid problems in understanding. It doesn't get terribly in depth, but it covers the bases well, and has enough information to keep you busy for some time. It's not terribly specific, but pagans are a varied lot, so in order not to exclude too many people, it kind of has to be. Still, definitely worth checking out.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Fierce ants build 'torture rack'

This description is just brutal. Granted, they're going to eat the insect afterwards, but this is definitely contrary to the idea that humans are more cruel than other creatures. we're just every bit as cruel as the others. However, what I find really interesting about this article is that many people consider humans the main tool-using creatures, but perhaps that's a limited definition. Since this is modifying their environment, and not something they hold, it seems less like a tool, but that seems like a limiting definition... particularly since ants don't actually have hands. It's a really interesting thing for me. Not sure if anyone else cares, though. ;-)

BadCorp.org: Stop funding your own oppression.

This is an interesting, if somewhat disturbing site. Personally, I'm not fully inclined to believe everything they're telling me, but it could be a good way to get more information on things you might not hear much about, and your own research could either support or oppose what you findat sites like this. It is important to hear the opinions on other sides of every issue, and this presenst some compelling arguments. I'd say it's worth checking out.

Self-Replicating Robots

Science News Article | Reuters.com

This is something. It's just a start, still, but interesting that they're making robots that make other robots ad nauseum. I know they're saying they'd be good for space travel or hazardous situations, but if science fiction has taught us anything, it's to be wary of self-replicating robots, because they'll just keep replicating and take over everything. There ought to at least be some concern about it. Still, I guess it's something cool they've been able to figure out how to do. It honestly didn't sound that hard to me, but I guess it might be more complicated than I'd think. With some thought and planning, this could be something cool.

Army, Marines miss recruiting goals again - U.S. News - MSNBC.com

Army, Marines miss recruiting goals again - U.S. News - MSNBC.com

I have a mixed reaction to this. The first thing that came was, "Well, duh..." Most people wouldn't be as eager to join the army if they knew they were going to be sent straight into the line of fire. Only a few nuts would really want to go. Of course recruitment is lagging... people are getting killed and most sensible people prefer not to be killed. Then there's a big thing about how it's not about the war, it's about serving your nation. But this war is very unpopular with the nation. One might perhaps better serve the nation by figuring out how to end the war. Regardless, the article ends by saying that the army is going to have to pick up the slack when the reserves run out of people, and that is not a comforting thought, because frankly, I don't trust the congress and the president farther than I could throw them. Personally, I'd hate to be drafted, and I'd likely emigrate, because I don't think this war is about our nation... I think it's about some jerks trying to hijack our nation, and if there were to be a draft, why that would be the ultimate signal that they'd succeeded, and even a rat knows to get off of a sinking ship. So... yeah, anyhow... this article rather disturbed me more than I thought it would. Hopefully, someone will develop some sense before everything gets worse.

David Suzuki Foundation: Home

This is a cool site I found at Melissa Auf Der Maur's blog. It focuses on environmenal issues, and has weekly columns by David Suzuki, a prominent environmentalist. I think it might be from Canada, so again, it focuses in different areas than where I am located, but much of the ideas still carry over, and since it's Canada, it's not that far away. I think it's going to become a place I visit regularly.

RollingStone.com: The Long Emergency : Politics

RollingStone.com: The Long Emergency : Politics

This was something unusual... an article from Rolling Stone that actually made me think. I've got to say that the sense of hopelessness this writer has doesn't help anyone, but he made some good points, and I learned a few things from it. It's about the energy crisis currently facing the world, and the potential aftermath. I think what bothers me is that he disputes the viability of alternative energy sources because they would require the use of our fossil fuel infrastructure to create them, but, for the moment anyway, we still have that, so we might as well put it to good use while we can. Yeah, creating solar and wind power plants requires a significant investment of energy, but that seems like one of the best things we could put that energy to in this case. Far better than, say, running an SUV for a year. It would provide energy that would be available from then on. He also didn't mention things like tidal power, or some other methods I know of. He also painted a rather bleak, almost apocalyptic picture of life without oil, which I'm not entirely sure is true. Still, it's a worthwhile article to read, because it does expose the seriousness of other aspects of the energry crisis... and has lots of things that most people probably haven't really heard about before.

Four Children Killed in Baghdad explosion

PeoplePC - News

I almost didn't want to blog this, because for me, it's just gotten to a point where I'm about sick of hearing about stuff in Iraq, but then I thought about the people who are living it. They don't have the choice to just stop reading about it, stop hearing about it, stop watching the news. It can still just come to them and blow them up, shoot them, kill them, maim them permanently. I know a lot of Americans' response is to ignore the problem because we think we can't do much of anything, but even just the intent for it to end has to add up to something. For my part, I'm still sending letters and emails to congresspeople, at least occasionally, and just taking note of what's happening. Ignoring the problem won't make it go away, and as I haven't got the power to really change it, directly, I think one of the best things I can do is to witness it as fully as I can, and try to use whatever means I have at my disposal to try to change things for the better.

This is cool because I had no idea there was a solar eclipse coming... even a partial one. What's cool to me is that at least a small fragment of it could be seen from where I am. There's also a link to a webcast of the eclipse which is even cooler, since I don't have the equipment to look at the eclipse, myself... and I'm sure it won't be very dramatic, since I'm just barely in the path of it at all. One thing I can say about MSN is that they do very well at covering eclipses and other cosmic events.

Wonder Woman

MSN Movies - Hollywood Hitlist

This author is... well, not very bright. As a consequence, I'm not inclined to believe much of it. There's almost no knowledge of the comic books or the mythology in them. Because Wonder Woman is an Amazon, he thinks she must come from the Amazon, which is just silly. The Amazon in South America was named after the mythological one, not vice versa. Wonder Woman is certainly NOT from South America. She's Greek. I know this, and I'm not even much of a Wonder Woman fan. It just bothered me that MSN got someone to write about a comic book thing that knew nothing about it, and just had lots of stupid misconceptions in it. If you're going to write about something, at least have the courtesy to know what you're talking about.

PeoplePC - News

This article piqued my interest, because well... it's something that could end up happening to me, if I'm one of those unlucky men who end up with prostate cancer. I try to do what I can to keep from getting it, but like the article says, we don't know all that much about it, because there's not a lot of funding, because it's not one of your more popular cancers, like breast cancer. Mind you, breast cancer is bad, and I'd like to see it cured, but really, the consequences from prostate cancer are a lot worse. Still, I like how this article has a more positive tone of learning from the amount of publicity breast cancer gets to try to get more funding for prostate cancer, just because it's probably one of the best attitudes you could have towards it. Hopefully, it'll work out.

Anyhow, it's pretty cool that they found some soft tissue from a dinosaur... it'll likely lead to a lot of new discoveries about how dinosaurs lived. Proposed Ban on Human Cloning

PeoplePC - News

I'm not sure what I think about this, honestly. I'm not entirely sure how cloning is a violation of human rights in and of itself. I could see how it could be exploited to that end, but the actual act of cloning, I don't understand how that violates human dignity. I mean... you shouldn't be cloned if you didn't want to be, but I dunno... cloning is kind of a sticky situation. I'm not one to make a hasty judgement that it's all good or all bad straight from the hip. I think it requires a lot more thought than that. I think, after a good while discussing the possible benefits and drawbacks, that it could be beneficial to start cloning on an experimental basis for those things that were decided to be beneficial and of least risk. The point about the exploitation of women in the article is well taken. These should definitely be on a volunteer basis... but that's another one of those things that ought to be a given... it's not really a problem inherent in the process of cloning (although a womb is still needed), but rather a potential abuse of the process. That's what we seem to need to look out for more than the process, itself. Then again, there really ought to be more discussion and thought on the matter, from my perspective.

Hopefully, this new guy will be effective in thwarting Bush's misguided environmental ideas.

MSN Health & Fitness - Can Too Many Diets Hurt Your Health?

This article was interesting. I'd heard in classes that some people were overweight, but healthy. I think it's possible. I doubt it's me, but it's possible. It's also good to see what I'd figured was the case, that it can be damaging to diet too much. I've never really been able to diet. I can make my lifestyle healthier, but I can't diet any more than just stopping eating before I'm full to see if I'll get full... and I think that's just stopping overeating. I think improving your health is more important than just losing weight. I've been at it for a while, and my weight has largely levelled off, but I feel healthier as time goes on. I still need to work at it more, of course, but it really does work a lot better, I think... even if the scale doesn't ever show results, anymore. I think people worry too much about dieting. There are ways you can look better and feel better that don't involve the massive shedding of pounds. If you live healthier, you'll lose weight naturally to a point, and feel better just from physically being in better shape. I still have a long way to go... but I think it's a good plan, anyhow.

MSNBC - Supreme Court weighs Commandments cases

MSNBC - Supreme Court weighs Commandments cases

This article is tough for me. I personally don't think that the ten commandments belong in government buildings. That's fine if your morality is based on the ten commandments, but mine is not, and much of the American legal apparatus comes from other places, as well. The people in the article claim the ten commandments unify Americans, but they don't. Those people were already unified. They keep the non-Christians separate, in what is supposed to be a country without an official religion. To emphasize the point... what would all those people who claim that it's celebrating American legal history say if there were a giant statue of I dunno... say, Zeus, with a plaque that read "All Hail Mighty Zeus, King of the Gods!" Most likely, they'd want it removed. But classical Greek knowledge was instrumental in the creation of our legal system. Perhaps that's too extreme an example... but it's one of the few ways I can demonstrate that it might have been a part of our legal system's development, but that doesn't mean that we need a giant statue of it. Our system is supposed to evolve to be functional and effective for all kinds of people, and our society is becoming more and more pluralistic. Clinging to the past is something that won't actually help us to grow into the future. And if it were a symbol of a religion that weren't yours, you could see how it might be a divider instead of a unifier.

Abolishing the Death Penalty for Minors

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7051296/

I was excited and happy when I read this. The death penalty is something I'm not really sure belongs in our society anymore... particularly after I saw a show on the History channel about various ways that people are executed. I knew it was nasty, but... it was worse than I thought. In the last election, I voted for the only candidate in my state that was for abolishing the death penalty. She didn't win, but I'm still glad I voted for her. I felt that made the campaign, really. Granted, this ruling only abolishes the death penalty for those who are under 18, but it's a step. What concerns me is that people don't seem to understand that just because the people aren't being punished by death, doesn't mean that they're not being punished. I suppose one could make a case for the state's rights... but personally, I believe this is enough of an issue in the world that it ought to be a national issue. Most of the rest of the developed world has abolished the death penalty, entirely. Their countries aren't overrun with murderous gangs of people who have no fear of punishment... in fact, their crime is down. In a class I took in college, we covered the death penalty (a philosophy class about death), and none of the traditional arguments for it actually hold water. What's particularly disturbing, though, is that my state is one of the ones that still had the death penalty for juveniles. It may only be a small step towards what I think is right, but it's at least enough progress to feel like celebrating.

CLARK COUNTY

http://www.lex18.com/Global/story.asp?S=2989614&nav=EQlpWjof

This is just absurd. A kid writes a story about zombies overrunning a high school, never mentioning names, places, or any of that, and someone finds it, and they arrest him and charge him with threatening terrorism on his school. He even says it was for a school project. It's this kind of thing that keeps people from finding real terrorists. Hell, a careful reading of the text should show that there's nothing here.

Just one more reason I'm glad I'm not from Kentucky. Still, it's entirely too close to where I am.
