Senate says English is national, unifying tongue - Yahoo! News
So, they decided to vote for a national language. Personally, I thought that one of the great things about our country was that it DIDN'T have a national language, but hey, that's me. I know it's a popular issue for some (shall we say, closed-minded) people. Personally, I'm a native English speaker, learned Spanish in High School, and have only a smattering of other languages to work with. Just because I speak English, though, doesn't mean I think everyone else should. While it's only gone through the Senate so far, I have doubts that it will have trouble going through the House, considering where the majority lies in that body of legislature. Maybe we'll get lucky, and only the milder version of it will pass, so we still won't have a full-on national language. I'm just really disappointed by this turn of events. I knew there were people who wanted it... it's a sort of misguided nationalism... but I had hoped that our bodies of government would have the sense not to followthose few, belligerent voices.
