I confess that the idea seemed a little odd to me when I first encountered it (with the movie). This does a lot to make it make more sense. While I am all for recognizing mysterious forces and the influence that mythology can have, this one just struck me as kind of odd and not something I believed in. Still, others do (or have), which creates a being, if only as an archetype. This provides a reasonable explanation for it all.
